The Guardians of the Friaries of the Our Lady of the Angels Province
A modern Provincial Chapter is reminiscent of the 1221 version when St. Francis called more than 3,000 friars to the Portiuncula chapel in Assisi for a general meeting or “Chapter of Mats.” At that time, the friars lived in huts made out of reeds and brought their sleeping mats with them, to the area surrounding the chapel so as to have a place to sit. Modern day friars, instead, do meet in a conference center and get to sit on actual chairs. It is however still thought of as a coming together as a family, offering witness of brotherhood and celebrating Franciscan life. Days are filled with meetings, presentations as well as the much needed work of organizing the general needs of the friars and ministries of the Province. It is also a time to just enjoy Franciscan Brotherhood. Upon the formation of the Our Lady of the Angels Province, two Chapters took place in May and August of 2014. As we friars proceed in our ministries, we ask for your continued prayers and we thank you for your ever present support.

This month, five of our friars professed First (Simple) Vows. After signing the book of profession, they were given the Book of the Gospels, the way and life of the Friars Minor. It is customary that during the year of Novitiate the friars wear a cord without the knots indicating the three vows. After profession the friars exchanged their straight for knotted cords.

Our Lady of the Angels Minister Provincial, the Very Reverend Fr. James McCurry, OFM Conv., Called and Presented Friar Nader to Most Reverend Denis J. After the Bishop’s homily, Friar Nader made his Commitment to Celibacy, declared before the people his intention to undertake the Diaconate Office through the Examination of the Candidate by the Bishop, and then made his Promise of Obedience to the Bishop, his Provincial, and their successors. The assembly then made an intercession to God for Friar Nader as all Saints were called upon to join in this great act of intercession through the Litany of the Saints. Impact Investing is a form of investment that can benefit local communities and the environment, as well as providing a reasonable return. Investors who follow this practice are conscious of the existence of serious unjust situations, instances of profound social inequality and unacceptable conditions of poverty affecting communities and entire peoples. These investors turn to financial institutes which will use their resources to promote the economic and social development of these groups, through investment funds aimed at satisfying basic needs associated with agriculture, access to water, adequate housing and reasonable prices, as well as with primary health care and educational services.
August 2nd is the Feast of the Portiuncula. This is an important feast day for all Franciscans and holds a special place in the hearts of the friars of Our Lady of the Angels Province. St. Mary of the Angels (known to us as Our Lady of the Angels) was very dear to St. Francis. It was referred to as Portiucula (or the Little Portion) and it is considered the cradle of the Franciscan Order. Once the quarters of Rivo Torto became too small for the newly forming religious family, St. Francis obtained from the Benedictines the use of the Portiuncula, for which he paid a basket of fish. The church and the surrounding small parcel of land were is disrepair. Just as he did at San Damiano, St. Francis rebuilt it, adding small huts (cells), enclosing it all in a protective hedge. It was there that St. Francis gained a more vivid understanding of his own vocation, the annual meetings of the friars (Chapters) were held, and where he desired to spend his final earthly moments, dying in his nearby cell. The Basilica of Santa Maria degli Angeli that covers the Portiuncula chapel was begun in 1569 (completed in 1684) by decree of Pius V. It was meant to accommodate the huge crowds of pilgrims who came on August 2nd for Il Perdono (Portiuncula Indulgence)
St. Francis felt that the Portiuncula was a place filled with God’s grace. He asked the Holy Father to grant special privilege (plenary indulgence – a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins) to those who visit the chapel. Although limited to August 2nd, the privilege continues to be granted to this day, not only to those who visit the Portiuncula, but to anyone who visits any church where the friars live and minister. To receive this privilege, in addition to the visit, one must go to confession within several weeks of the feast, receive the Eucharist, recite the Our Father and Apostles Creed, and pray for the intentions of the Holy Father.
