The Franciscan Friars Conventual of Our Lady of the Angels Province serve in varied ministries along the East Coast of Canada and the USA, in addition to our friars serving abroad. Traditionally, in several countries throughout the world, including Canada, communities have participated in an annual Polar Bear Plunge (swim or dip) to celebrate the start of the New Year and raise funds for charity. In the US, these Polar Bear Plunges have also taken on the spirit of raising charitable funds and awareness. Although originally these events were created by winter bathing organizations and clubs as recreational fun, many have transformed into events utilized to raise funds for organizations such as the Special Olympics and Camp Sunshine.
This year our friars are participating in a few Polar Bear Plunges. As part of Franciscan Action Network’s commitment to care for all of creation, Our Lady of the Angels Province’s Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation Commission Chairman, Fr. Michael Lasky, OFM Conv. is virtually participating in a Polar Bear Plunge organized by the Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN). For the last few years, the annual event has helped raise funds for important local grassroots efforts on climate justice. He will be in Assisi during this year’s plunge, helping Global Catholic Climate Movement build a strategy to instill new ways to “Live Laudato Si.” Since he will not be in the country, he has to participate virtually. You can still support him and the effort to raise funds for climate justice, by donating HERE.
Others from our province joining in a Polar Bear Plunge are Friar Tim Blanchard, OFM Conv., Friar Patrick Roth, OFM Conv., Friar Franck Lino, OFM Conv. and Friar Max Avila, OFM Conv. These friars are helping the 21st Annual Maryland State Police Polar Bear Plunge to raise funds in support of the Special Olympics. To support Team “The friars,” or to support one of these friars individually, please donate HERE.
Thank you in advance for your support and please consider spreading the word on these great opportunities to participate through your generous financial giving.
