For Our Lady of the Angels Province friar, Fr. Matthew Foley, OFM Conv., 2009 was a very big year. He was ordained to the priesthood, received his M.Div. (Theology) from the Washington Theological Union and began serving the students of our high school ministry – Archbishop Curley High School, in Baltimore, MD. On the weekend of February 9-11, 2018, his 10 years of experience serving the young people of our Church made him the perfect choice to speak at the 2018 Mount2000.
Mount2000 is a Catholic Retreat for High School students, coordinated by the Seminarians of Mount St. Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, MD. Named for the celebration of the Jubilee in 2000, over the last 17 years, Mount2000 has given students the opportunity to encounter Christ, through the celebration of the Mass, the sacrament of Confession, Eucharistic Adoration, talks from guest speakers, and music concerts throughout a weekend retreat. During Mount2000, each participating group is paired with a seminarian who participates in the retreat with the group along side them. This includes eating meals together with them, teaching them how to pray the bible, and offering time for conversation. With almost 1500 high school students at Mount2000, having a seminarian minister to each group adds a uniquely personable element to the retreat experience.
As the presenter for the “Talk 2” this year, Friar Matt opened himself up to the participants, which included a group of his own students from Archbishop Curley High School, through an honest, humorous and heartfelt discussion of his own formative years. He challenged the participants to embrace the joy found through making a good confession in the Sacrament of Reconciliation.
