We currently have eight friars in Costa Rica, living in the Convento Nuestra Señora de la Asunción and in the Convento St. Francis, in Moravia. Those residing and serving in Alajuela, welcomed Veronica Hotovy and Nina Hill, the two volunteers from our FrancisCorps Ministry, to their annual traditional Prayers at the Manger (refered to as pasito for indoor Nativities and portales for outdoor ones), held on this year on February 2nd, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord, also known as Día de la Candelaria (Candlemas Day). This is a family or neighborhood event, as guests are welcomed into the home of the hosts (in this case our friary).
El Rezo del Niño (Prayers of the Child) is a very social event that includes music and evening prayer. Celebrations focused on the Birth of Christ take place all through January, in Costa Rica, up until the nativity scene is dismantled for the year. The season for the rezo starts on January 7th, after the Feast of the Epiphany. It runs up to and including the Feast of Candlemas on February 2nd. El Rezo del Niño prayer is centered around the rosary, asking for the intercession of the Blessed Mother ~ to Jesus through Mary.
